Five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning icon Erykah Badu is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark sophomore album Mama’s Gun with the release of stunning new limited-edition vinyl variants, available now. Widely regarded as one of the most influential albums of the neo-soul movement, Mama’s Gun continues to resonate as a fearless, deeply personal, and culturally transformative body of work.
Released originally on November 21, 2000, Mama’s Gun marked a pivotal moment in Badu’s artistic evolution. The album debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, delivered her strongest first-week sales to date with more than 191,000 copies sold, and achieved Platinum certification from the RIAA in just four weeks. Anchored by timeless tracks like “Bag Lady,” “Didn’t Cha Know?” and “Orange Moon,” the album earned three GRAMMY® nominations and solidified Badu’s place as a generational voice unafraid to challenge conventions of love, womanhood, and Black identity.
To commemorate the anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) has unveiled multiple premium vinyl offerings tailored for collectors and audiophiles alike. The UMe e-commerce exclusive arrives as a deluxe 2LP pressed on striking Gold Black Ice vinyl. This edition features a newly redesigned gatefold jacket, alternate cover artwork, and a collectible lithograph—reimagining the Mama’s Gun era through a modern visual lens.
Equally significant is the newly released Vinylphyle edition, which marks the first-ever hi-resolution remaster of Mama’s Gun since its original CD release. Sourced directly from the original production tapes, the 2LP was cut by Joe Nino-Hernes at Sterling Sound Nashville and pressed at RTI on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl. This edition also includes newly written liner notes by Badu herself, offering rare insight into the album’s creation, meaning, and enduring legacy.
Over the last 25 years, Mama’s Gun has proven to be more than an album—it is a cultural cornerstone. Its influence spans generations and genres, earning placement on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Pitchfork’s 200 Best Albums of the Last 25 Years, and NPR’s 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women. With over one billion streams worldwide, the album’s relevance remains undiminished. Pitchfork famously awarded it a rare 9.4 rating, praising Badu for crafting a record that confronts intimacy, trauma, and self-awareness with rare emotional clarity.
Further celebrating the milestone, Badu partnered with Spotify for its Anniversaries video series, reflecting on the album’s 25-year journey while performing select tracks from Mama’s Gun. The collaboration underscores the album’s timeless appeal and its continued discovery by new audiences.
Badu’s genre-defying fusion of soul, R&B, jazz, funk, rock, reggae, and spoken word across the album’s 14 tracks forever changed the sonic landscape. That legacy was brought full circle in 2025, when she toured North America on the Mama’s Gun 25 World Tour, performing the album in its entirety to sold-out crowds—proving its power is as potent live as it is on wax.
