Shaggy Taps Vintage Dancehall with New “Badman” Riddim – First Singles Drop August 22

VP Records and Shaggy’s Ranch Entertainment are teaming up to bring a fresh yet nostalgic experience to Dancehall fans with the release of the “Badman” riddim project. Produced by Shaggy and Shane Hoosong, this project is a modern revival of the classic “Gunman” riddim, a defining sound of early ’80s Dancehall. The first singles from this series are set to drop on August 22, marking a significant moment for fans of the genre and for Shaggy, who continues to innovate while honoring the roots of Dancehall music.

Reviving the Iconic “Gunman” Riddim

The “Badman” riddim series is built upon the legendary “Gunman” riddim, originally crafted by Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes. Known for its brass-heavy sound, this riddim became synonymous with Dancehall culture, most notably as the backbone of Michael Prophet’s “Gunman,” a track that remains a favorite in sound systems worldwide. By revisiting and reimagining this riddim, Shaggy and Hoosong are not just paying homage to the past but also bringing its energy into the present, offering both old and new fans a chance to experience the magic of Dancehall’s golden era.

Olaf Blackwood and Shaggy Kick Off the Project

The first single, “Selector Pull It,” is a collaboration between Grammy-nominated artist Olaf Blackwood and diamond-selling artist Shaggy. This track is a celebration of Dancehall’s vibrant and lively culture, capturing the essence of a dancehall party where the DJ plays the crowd’s favorite tunes repeatedly to keep the energy alive. With its catchy lyrics and infectious rhythm, “Selector Pull It” is poised to become a dancefloor anthem, echoing the carefree and jubilant spirit that has always been at the heart of Dancehall music.

Shaggy debuted “Selector Pull It” during a live performance on On the Radar Radio in late July, receiving an enthusiastic response from fans. The track, co-written by Blackwood and Shaggy, is a testament to their shared love for the genre and their desire to create music that resonates with both longtime Dancehall aficionados and new listeners alike. The music video for “Selector Pull It,” directed by Jay Will, further amplifies this vibe, taking viewers straight into the heart of a Kingston dance, complete with appearances from iconic Dancehall figures such as Bounty Killer and Gyptian.

Junior Cat Adds Authenticity with “Rude Bwoy Sumthin”

Also releasing on August 22 is “Rude Bwoy Sumthin” by Junior Cat, a veteran of the Dancehall sound system scene known as “The Wild Indian.” This track delves deep into the gritty and authentic side of Dancehall, with Junior Cat delivering powerful lyrics that celebrate the original gangster persona that has long been a staple of the genre. His raw energy and vivid storytelling bring a level of authenticity to the “Badman” riddim project, ensuring that it stays true to the roots of Dancehall while still appealing to modern audiences.

Upcoming Releases and Continuing Legacy

The excitement doesn’t stop with these first two tracks. On September 12, the “Queen of Dancehall,” Spice, will release her contribution to the “Badman” riddim project, promising to bring her signature flair and unmatched energy to the series. Fans can also look forward to more singles from various artists, each offering their unique take on this reimagined classic riddim.

This collaboration between VP Records and Ranch Entertainment follows the success of Shaggy’s previous releases, including his 2023 soca-inspired EP In The Mood. With the “Badman” riddim, Shaggy continues to push boundaries, blending the past with the present to create something truly special for Dancehall lovers.
