Celebrating Black Excellence & Women Who Push Boundaries: A Powerful Gathering of Trailblazers

Jayne Kennedy

This past Sunday, the GreenLight Women’s Black History Month Champagne Brunch was more than just an event—it was a powerful affirmation of Black excellence, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of equity. Held in a room filled with dynamic leaders, changemakers, and visionaries, the brunch honored the achievements of Black women who have redefined the landscape of entertainment, media, and beyond.

Against the backdrop of history and progress, attendees were treated to a morning of inspiration, storytelling, and celebration. The event wasn’t just about reflecting on past triumphs; it was a call to action—a reminder that the work toward inclusion and equity is far from over.

A Celebration of Trailblazers

The event shined a spotlight on remarkable women whose contributions have opened doors and created new pathways for future generations. Two honorees in particular—Jayne Kennedy and Regina Jones—were recognized for their groundbreaking roles in media and journalism. Their journeys have not only challenged industry norms but have also paved the way for aspiring Black women to claim their rightful spaces in storytelling and leadership.

Kennedy, a pioneering sports broadcaster, shattered barriers in a field dominated by men, proving that women—especially Black women—belong in sports media. Regina Jones, as the founder of Soul magazine, has been a pillar of Black journalism, ensuring that Black culture, music, and narratives receive the visibility and respect they deserve. Their legacies serve as testaments to the power of representation and perseverance.

The Power of Personal Narratives

One of the most moving moments of the brunch came from Starla Lewis, who shared her personal journey as part of the first Black family to integrate Altadena, CA’s school district. Her story highlighted the courage it takes to break barriers and the emotional weight of being a pioneer in spaces that were not initially designed for inclusion.

Lewis’s reflections underscored a crucial message: visibility matters. When Black women take up space in industries, institutions, and communities, they set powerful examples for those who follow. Her words resonated deeply, reminding attendees of the importance of continuing the fight for equal opportunities, representation, and justice.

A Unifying Performance by J. Boykin

Music has always been a catalyst for unity and empowerment, and J. Boykin’s performance was a shining example of that. His captivating musical set was not just entertainment—it was an emotional and cultural experience that reinforced the strength and beauty of Black artistry.

The power of music to bridge generations, cultures, and experiences was on full display, and Boykin’s performance served as a reminder that art and activism are often inseparable. His music amplified the themes of the event, celebrating resilience, excellence, and Black joy.

Conversations That Inspire Change

In addition to honoring legends and enjoying artistic performances, the event also sparked meaningful discussions on the state of equity and representation. Dominique DiPrima, known for her thought-provoking work in media, facilitated deep conversations that explored unity, collaboration, and the responsibility of lifting each other up.

These discussions were not only enlightening but also necessary. As attendees engaged in dialogue about breaking down systemic barriers and creating lasting change, one theme remained clear: progress happens when communities work together. DiPrima’s facilitation reinforced the idea that real change requires active participation, support, and a commitment to challenging the status quo.

A Space for Women Over 40 to Thrive

One of the most commendable aspects of GreenLight Women is its dedication to uplifting women over 40. Too often, society sidelines women as they age, especially in industries like entertainment and media. This event reaffirmed that brilliance, creativity, and leadership do not come with an expiration date.

By celebrating and empowering women with decades of experience, wisdom, and talent, GreenLight Women is actively challenging ageism while amplifying voices that have historically been overlooked. The brunch served as a powerful reminder that every stage of life offers opportunities to push boundaries and redefine success.

A Call to Action

While the event was a moment of celebration, it was also a call to action. Attendees left inspired not just by the stories they heard but by the realization that they, too, have a role to play in pushing for a more equitable world.

Whether it’s through mentorship, advocacy, storytelling, or leadership, the responsibility of driving change belongs to everyone. The brunch was a testament to the fact that when Black women support and uplift one another, there are no limits to what can be achieved.

As we reflect on this unforgettable event, let’s carry its message forward:
Keep pushing boundaries.
