For many children, the simple act of seeing a character who looks like them can be life-changing. It builds confidence, sparks imagination, and reinforces the belief that their dreams, experiences, and voices truly matter. Author and literacy advocate Valerie J. Lewis Coleman is helping make that vision a reality through the growing When I See Me™ movement, an initiative focused on empowering children through culturally relevant books, guided journals, and meaningful literacy experiences.
This summer marks another exciting milestone as Coleman introduces the first three titles in her new When I See Me™ Journal Collection, expanding her mission from inspiring children to read to encouraging them to become confident writers of their own stories.
Designed for children between the ages of 5 and 12, the journals create safe, creative spaces where young readers can reflect, dream, express emotions, and celebrate who they are. The debut collection includes I Am Amazing!, I Am Growing Every Day!, and My Voice Matters!, each carefully created to support different stages of childhood development through age-appropriate prompts, activities, and confidence-building exercises.
Coleman believes that literacy extends far beyond reading words on a page. By encouraging children to write about their own experiences, they begin to understand that their ideas have value and their voices deserve to be heard. That philosophy has become the foundation of a movement that continues to inspire families, educators, and communities.
The official launch of the journals will take place during the Third Annual When I See Me™ Children’s Book Fair on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Dayton Metro Library – West Branch in Dayton, Ohio. The free community celebration will feature author meet-and-greets, live story readings, literacy workshops, interactive family activities, giveaways, and opportunities for children to begin building their own personal libraries.
One of the movement’s most celebrated initiatives is A Book in Every Bag™, which has already provided more than 1,000 children with free books to encourage reading at home. By placing books directly into the hands of young readers, the program helps strengthen literacy while creating positive family reading experiences that can last a lifetime.
Parents continue to share powerful stories about the transformation they see in their children. Many report that once their sons and daughters encounter characters who reflect their own lives and cultures, they become more enthusiastic about reading and, eventually, eager to create stories of their own. That growing confidence often reaches far beyond books, influencing classroom participation, communication skills, creativity, and self-esteem.
Beyond serving families, the initiative also partners with educators, librarians, literacy organizations, youth-serving agencies, and community leaders who recognize the importance of culturally responsive learning materials. Together, they are helping children develop not only stronger reading and writing skills but also emotional resilience and self-confidence.
Six Reasons This Literacy Movement Is Making an Extraordinary Difference
- Children become the authors of their own stories, developing creativity, confidence, and stronger communication skills through guided journaling.
- Representation matters, allowing young readers to see themselves reflected in books and educational experiences that celebrate diverse backgrounds.
- Confidence grows alongside literacy, as writing prompts encourage children to recognize their strengths, express emotions, and dream without limits.
- Families and communities are actively engaged through book fairs, literacy events, workshops, and interactive activities that make reading enjoyable.
- More than 1,000 children have already received free books through the A Book in Every Bag™ initiative, helping build home libraries and lifelong reading habits.
- The movement supports educators and youth organizations by providing meaningful resources that strengthen literacy, self-expression, and social-emotional development.
As literacy experts continue emphasizing the importance of early reading and writing experiences, initiatives like When I See Me™ demonstrate that books can do much more than improve academic performance. They can inspire children to believe in themselves, embrace their unique identities, and recognize that every voice has value.
With the launch of its new journal collection, Valerie J. Lewis Coleman is encouraging the next generation to move beyond reading inspiring stories and begin writing their own. For countless young people, that may become the first step toward a future filled with confidence, purpose, creativity, and limitless possibility.
